Gothenburg barges started to be built in the late 19th century, and as recently as the 1960s there were still a significant number in Gothenburg port. In total over 3,600 Gothenburg barges were built. A ‘barn’ was a Gothenburg barge with a simple house construction added. There were large doors on one long side and hatches in the ceiling for loading and unloading. The ‘barn’ was mainly used for fragile cargo susceptible to rain.
